How do drugs work in Amsterdam?
How do drugs work in Amsterdam?
Amsterdam is famous for its tolerant attitude toward certain substances, but the rules are often misunderstood. Many visitors think everything is legal, while in reality the system is much more nuanced.
On our Alternative Tour, we explain how it really works, where the myths come from, and how Amsterdam’s unique drug policy became part of the city’s identity.
Marijuana & Hashish
Cannabis is not technically legal in the Netherlands, but it is tolerated under a policy called gedoogbeleid. This means that adults can buy and possess small amounts of cannabis without being prosecuted.
Cannabis products such as marijuana, hashish, and space cakes can be purchased in licensed coffeeshops. However, these shops are only allowed to sell small amounts to adults and must follow strict regulations.
Many varieties sold in the Netherlands are strong, especially locally grown Nederwiet. If you are new to cannabis, it is wise to start slowly and always ask the staff in the coffeeshop for advice.
During our Alternative Tour, you’ll learn how coffeeshops became part of Amsterdam’s culture and what visitors should know before stepping inside.
Magic Truffles
Magic mushrooms were banned in 2008, but magic truffles remain legal and are sold in special stores called smartshops. They contain psilocybin, which can cause strong changes in perception, mood, and time.
The effects can vary depending on the type and dosage, so visitors are advised to use them carefully and always ask for guidance from experienced staff.
On the Alternative Tour, we explain the difference between mushrooms and truffles and how Amsterdam regulates these experiences.
Hard Drugs
Hard drugs such as cocaine, MDMA, ecstasy (XTC), and amphetamines are illegal in the Netherlands. The Dutch authorities have a strict policy against these substances, and possession can lead to fines or arrest.
Buying drugs from street dealers is also dangerous because the quality and contents are unknown. If someone wants to check substances for safety, they can use drug testing services from organizations such as Jellinek.
We also cover why Amsterdam’s reputation around drugs is often exaggerated and what is actually allowed versus what is not.
Do’s and Don’ts
Do visit a coffeeshop if you are curious about Amsterdam’s cannabis culture.
Don’t cause disturbances while under the influence.
Do ask staff for advice about dosage and responsible use.
Don’t ask for hard drugs in a coffeeshop.
Do be careful with edibles and truffles because they take time to work.
Don’t assume every Dutch person uses cannabis.
