Booking A Tour FAQ
Can I reserve the tour for more than 6 people?
Reservations for the Free Walking Tour Amsterdam are limited to a maximum of 6 people per booking. We keep our groups small to ensure the best possible experience for everyone.
The maximum group size for guided tours in Amsterdam is 15 people. Smaller groups make it easier for everyone to hear the guide, ask questions, and enjoy the stories along the way. It also creates a more relaxed and social atmosphere for travelers exploring the city together.
What happens if I make multiple reservations?
If you make several reservations to try to bring a larger group on the Free Walking Tour Amsterdam, we unfortunately won’t be able to take the extra participants. Those spots may instead be given to other travelers who are waiting to join the tour.
Can larger groups join the tour?
If you are traveling with more than 6 people, we recommend booking a private walking tour in Amsterdam. This allows your group to have a guide dedicated entirely to you and to choose a time that fits your schedule.
For group bookings we offer private tours here:

This way your group can still enjoy a great experience while keeping our Free Walking Tour Amsterdam comfortable and enjoyable for everyone.
What is the Classic Tour?
The Classic Tour is a 2-hour introduction to Amsterdam’s historic centre with a local storyteller. You hear how the city developed, discover canal architecture and learn about Dutch culture and daily life. The walk covers around 3 km and starts at the National Monument on Dam Square. It is tip-based, with a separate €2 booking fee per participant.
Where do we go with the Classic Tour?
Each guide follows their own route through Amsterdam’s historic centre, covering approximately 3 km (about 2 miles). We meet on Dam Square: look for the white umbrellas in front of the National Monument. The tour finishes at or close to Dam Square.
Are free walking tours in Amsterdam worth it?
A walking tour is useful if you want more than a list of sights: a guide explains the history, people and everyday life behind the streets. Our Classic Tour offers a 2-hour introduction with storytelling and local recommendations. It suits first-time visitors who enjoy exploring on foot. If you prefer a specialist theme, consider the Anne Frank Tour or Alternative Tour.
Is the Classic Tour a history tour?
Not exclusively!
While we do cover how Amsterdam became a major trading city in the 17th century, this tour isn’t just about history. We also dive into the city’s drug culture, bike culture, and much more. Along the way, we’ll share insider tips on where to go and what to do, helping you avoid tourist traps and experience Amsterdam like a local.
If you’re more interested in history, consider joining our Anne Frank Tour, which explores the Jewish community before and during WWII, or the Dark Side Tour, which uncovers the city’s dark past, including torture, witch hunts, and urban myths versus truths. These tours offer a deeper look into Amsterdam’s fascinating and sometimes gritty history.
Do I need to book a free walking tour in advance?
Book in advance to reserve your place and receive your tour details. Each guide takes a maximum of 15 participants, including children, so walk-in places depend on availability. Select a date and departure in the booking calendar, register everyone in your party and complete the reservation. Check available Classic Tour dates.
Is the Classic Tour accessible for children / dogs / wheelchairs?
Yes, the Classic Tour is designed to be accessible for a wide range of participants!
It’s a great option for families with kids of all ages, as well as those traveling with dogs (as long as your furry friend is comfortable walking).
The tour is also wheelchair- and stroller-friendly, though please note that some areas of Amsterdam’s historic streets may be challenging for certain mobility devices. If you have specific accessibility needs, feel free to contact us in advance, and we’ll be happy to provide more details to ensure your experience is as comfortable as possible.
Is it required to book for children?
Yes, every walking person has to be registered.
Amsterdam county is very strict about the maximum number of participants on tours (max 15 per group), and government officials count every walking person as an attendee. This includes children of any age, even when they are in a stroller or carrier.
What will I see on the Classic Tour in Amsterdam?
The Classic Tour introduces Amsterdam’s history, canals and everyday life on a walk of about 3 km (2 miles). Typical highlights include Dam Square, the Royal Palace, the New Church and the UNESCO-listed Canal Belt. Each guide chooses their own route, so individual stops can vary. This is an outdoor walking tour; museum admission is not included.
Where does the free walking tour start and end?
Meet at the National Monument, the white statue on Dam Square. Look for our guides with white umbrellas. Most Classic Tours finish at or close to Dam Square. Check your confirmation for the date and starting time, and see our meeting point directions.
How long does the Classic Tour take?
Allow about 2 hours, with a mix of walking and storytelling stops. The route covers approximately 3 km through the city centre. Wear comfortable shoes and bring weather-appropriate clothing.
Are free walking tours in Amsterdam really free?
Our Classic Tour has no fixed ticket price for the guided walk, but there is a €2 booking fee per participant. A tip for your guide is voluntary: you decide the amount after the tour. The booking fee is separate from the tip, so an online reservation is not completely cost-free.
