Local stories after dark
The Free Red Light Tour Amsterdam takes you beyond the clichés of De Wallen. In 90 minutes, your English-speaking local guide connects the city’s medieval harbour, sailors and nightlife with the people, policies and debates that shape Amsterdam today.
This is a thoughtful, entertaining walking tour for adults who want to understand the neighbourhood. We walk around De Wallen via Warmoesstraat, Zeedijk and Damstraat. The guided route does not pass sex-work windows. After finishing on Dam Square, you can explore independently and respectfully.
Three stories we explore on the tour
Behind the neon lights lies a neighbourhood shaped by working lives, hidden faith and centuries of seafaring. These are three of the stories your guide brings to life.
Pole dancing & working life
What is life like for the women who work in the Red Light District? Through stories about pole dancing, adult entertainment and sex work, we explore the different roles behind the neon lights, the importance of privacy and respect, and the people beyond the stereotypes.
The hidden church
A complete Catholic church concealed inside a canal house: Ons’ Lieve Heer op Solder, or Our Lord in the Attic, reveals another side of De Wallen. Discover the story of this church, opened in 1663, and what hidden worship tells us about faith and Amsterdam’s complicated history of tolerance.
VOC ships, sailors & De Wallen
Amsterdam was a city of ships, merchants and sailors. Learn about the Dutch East India Company (VOC), life at sea and the harbour’s connection to De Wallen. We connect returning sailors and shore leave with the inns, nightlife and sex work that helped shape the district, alongside the wider legacy of colonial trade.
These images illustrate stories discussed on the walk. The tour does not include a pole-dancing show, entry to the hidden church or a ship visit.

A respectful Red Light District walking tour
Amsterdam places restrictions on guided tours near sex-work windows to protect privacy and neighbourhood life. Our route avoids those windows. Follow your guide’s instructions, keep streets and entrances clear, and treat residents and workers with respect.
Never photograph or film sex workers or their windows. Street photography should always respect privacy. When the tour ends, you can continue independently to De Wallen, Nieuwmarkt, Zeedijk or the nearby canals.
