Eating in Amsterdam

While you are in Amsterdam, I would recommend going for a night of Indonesian food. Something to enjoy thanks to The Netherlands’ colonial past (which is a part of history with two faces). It’s a typical Dutch thing, but please order the ‘Rice Table’. It will provide you with a bunch of little plates with different flavours.

Indrapura | Located on the Rembrandtplein, this has been a local favorite for 30 years.

Long Pura | The staff is dressed in traditional clothing and they even serve a vegan rice table.

Winkel 43 | Visit this place for a nice lunch or dinner. They have a nice selection of dishes, but are known worldwide for baking the best apple pie in town! It is in the Jordaan neighborhood, one of the nicest neighborhoods of the Netherlands.

Dutch Herring | When you are visiting the Netherlands, you have to try a Dutch Herring! Probably the only healthy Dutch Snack we have. It will melt on your tongue. You can find these herring booth’s in the streets and main locations of Amsterdam but also in a fish store.

Drinking in Amsterdam

You can visit the main squares like Rembrandtplein or Leidscheplein, but I would recommend to take a dive in the Jordaan and visit one of these ‘brown bars’ we have, like the Papeneiland or Café Chris.

De Drie Fleschjes | The oldest bar in Amsterdam you will find behind the New Church. The painter Rembrandt van Rijn consumed his Jenever in this very place.

Shopping in Amsterdam

I am not sure if Amsterdam is really known for it’s shopping like Milan or Paris. We do have a rodeo drive kind of street: The PC Hooftstraat.

For more picturesque shopping, the Nine Streets are known with vintage shops and boutiques.

It is well worth to visit a market while in Amsterdam. Every Saturday there is a merket in the Jordaan, I always go to:

Lindenmarkt | Open every Saturday in the Jordaan.

Albert Cuyp Markt | If you are not here on a Saturday, go to one of the oldest still existing daily markets of Europe. Here you will find clothing, antiques and other non-food stands, but also a lot of food including typically Dutch treats like: cheese, herring and stroopwafels.

Getting High in Amsterdam

Museums in Amsterdam

Rijksmuseum | It might not be the most original suggestion, but the Rijksmuseum is a fantastic Museum. It is huge but you can also pick a theme with an audio tour in you won language, based on your interests and time you have. The Dutch Masters are really worth your while. They innovated painting with bringing movement and emotions to biblical scenes, but also started painting ordinary people and households at a great scale.

Resistance Museum | If you are interested in WW2, visit the ‘Verzetsmuseum’, located across from the Amsterdam Zoo, Artis.

Scheepvaartmuseum | If you are interested in the history of Dutch Shipping, visit this maritime museum.

Amsterdam Outdoors

Vondelpark | The Central Park of Amsterdam. Locals and tourists both love it.

There are lovely parks outside the city centre that are also worthwhile, like the Westerpark and the Oosterpark.

Jordaan Neighborhood | One of the best neighborhoods to get lost!!
