Cafe ‘t Smalle | This wonderful ‘Brown Cafe’ is located in the heart of the Jordaan, dating from the 17th century. Brown Cafes are old school Dutch bars serving traditional brews and spirits. They typically don’t play music – although you might encounter Joost playing the ukulele. On a sunny day, you can sit on the terrace outside, that has hands down one of the best canal views in the Jordaan. Boats moor right at the outdoor terrace jetty, so you can get your coffee/beer break when cruising the canals!

Wynand Fockink | Authentic Jenever distillery from the 17th century, still operational to this day. Jenever is the Dutch version of gin. There are many fortified fruit wines on offer as well. This place is a 100% must visit for anyone visiting the city.

Cafe De Wetering | This spot is a favorite winter hideout, yet popular among locals year round. Tucked away in a backstreet near the Rijksmuseum, this place is a gem. It comprises a small bar, with a mezzanine and tiny gallery. The mezzanine is dimly lit with low lights over each table and heated by a most welcoming log fire. Cash payment only.

De Bijenkorf | This is the oldest department store in the Netherlands and caters to every taste, with a focus on luxury and fashion brands. It also has a lovely cafe on the top floor.

Markets | No visit in Amsterdam is complete without experiencing one of its many street markets. The Albert Cuyp Markt is the biggest and most popular, but the Dappermarkt and Noordermarkt that come highly recommended. Make sure the market you choose to visit is running that day.

DNA | There are plenty coffee shops in Amsterdam, this one being popular with locals.

Easy Times | One of the leading coffeeshops in Amsterdam since its opening in 1985.

La Tertulia | Located on the Prinsengracht, you can find them on the corner of Oude Looiersstraat and the beautiful Prinsengracht Canal in the Amsterdam Jordaan.

Ons’ Lieve Heer op Solder | Our ‘Dear Lord in the Attic’ is a unique museum offering an excellent audio tour. Telling the story about the 17th century secret catholic church that was constructed in an attic, in order to avoid getting into trouble with the authorities in at the time a protestant city.

Rijksmuseum | The Dutch National Museum displays most of the treasures of the 17th century Dutch Republic. Amongst which the world-famous Rembrandt’s Nightwatch, Vermeer’s Girl with the Pearl Earring. are just a few examples of the famous paintings that can be found. A visit here is a must.

Paleis op de Dam (The Royal Palace) | This is the former town hall of Amsterdam, it has grand interiors and an impressive façade. Inside you will see a huge room with marble floors that are engraved with maps of the Dutch explorers, as well as the interior design choice of King Louis who lived in the palace during his rather short reign. He was the first king of the Netherlands and the little brother of Napoleon.

Vondelpark | This city park is arguably the cities’ most beautiful one. It’s an excellent place for walking, cycling, skating or just relaxing. With its size equivalent to 47 football fields, you won’t get bored quickly.

Westerpark | Boasting plenty of reappropriated old red brick factory buildings in it, this large park offers lots of food and drink options. There is a brewery, a wine bar, an independent cinema and the alternative music club Pacific Park.

Amstelpark | This park is located along the Amstel river and has many different sections in it, from rose gardens to sculptures, a zoo, a train for children and a maze. It is a magical park.

NDSM Werf | A former shipyard located along the banks of the River IJ in Amsterdam Noord. The NDSM Wharf has blossomed into an enormous cultural hotspot in recent years with a vibrant artist community and an ever-expanding variety of bars and restaurants including my favorites: Pllek and Noorderlicht.

The Jordaan | My favorite place in Amsterdam! Make sure to visit de Tweede Tuindwarsstraat in particular, as it has lots of nice bars; including cafe De Tuin, the great pizzeria called La Perla mentioned above and a fantastic ice cream shop.

Noordermarkt | Also located in the Jordaan, this area has many nice bars, including Winkler 43. They have the best apple pie of Amsterdam, served with fresh whipped cream (!!!). On Saturday there is a lovely market where you can by delicious organic Dutch cheese.
